Can the Chiefs’ Historic Super Bowl Win Make an NBA Legend Richer?

The Kansas City Chiefs are on the verge of making NFL history. If they win Super Bowl LIX, they’ll become the first team to clinch three consecutive Super Bowl titles. It’s a rare feat that’s often referred to as a “three-peat” – and here’s where things get interesting for an NBA legend.

Pat Riley, the legendary former coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat, holds the trademark for the term “three-peat.” Back in the 1980s, Riley coined the phrase when his Lakers were chasing a third straight championship. Though the team fell short, Riley’s savvy move to trademark the term has paid off over the years.

When the Chicago Bulls completed their three-peat in 1993 under Michael Jordan, Riley’s intellectual property rights likely earned him a tidy sum. Now, if the Chiefs win and decide to use the term to celebrate their historic achievement, Riley could benefit financially once again.

Riley’s business, Riles & Company, Inc., owns trademarks for “three-peat,” “3 peat,” and “threepeat,” among others. While Riley doesn’t aggressively pursue royalties, he’s open to licensing the term. “If somebody wants to license that phrase, we’ll license it to them,” Riley said in an interview.

So, as the Chiefs gear up for their shot at history, there’s more than just a trophy on the line. For Pat Riley, it could mean another unexpected payday. Talk about a win-win!
