California Wildfires Claim Lives as Flames Intensify Near San Diego
The devastating wildfires sweeping through California have left more than two dozen people dead, with the flames raging near San Diego and Los Angeles. In the hillside community of Altadena, the Eaton fire destroyed countless homes, claiming lives and leaving families in shock.
Among the victims was Evelyn McClendon, 59, who lived with her extended family in Altadena. Her brother, Zaire Calvin, recounted the frantic moments of the evacuation, still haunted by why she didn’t leave. Oswald “Ozzie” Altmetz, 75, another victim, was a beloved neighbor who tragically perished alongside his dog, Harley, in the fire he believed wouldn’t reach him.
The Mitchell family also lost two members—Anthony, 68, and his son Justin, who had cerebral palsy. Despite calls for help, no assistance arrived in time. Victor Shaw, 66, was found clutching a garden hose in his front yard, trying in vain to save his home.
Over in the Palisades fire, Mark Shterenberg, 80, was likely one of the first to lose his life. A dedicated family man and inspiration to his grandchildren, he lived by the motto, “Study math, keep money in the bank, and do three good things every day.”
Randall Miod, 55, a Malibu surfing legend, chose to stay in his beloved home despite warnings. His final words to his mother were, “Pray for the Palisades and pray for Malibu. I love you.”
These tragedies highlight the sheer unpredictability and danger of the wildfires. As winds continue to fan the flames, many are left mourning the lives lost and grappling with the devastation.
Stay safe, and keep an eye on local alerts as these fires continue to burn.
