‘These animals are essentially family:’ Rescue efforts save horses, sheep, and ducks amid California wildfires

As deadly wildfires tear through Southern California, the focus isn’t just on saving lives—it’s also about rescuing the animals caught in the chaos. From horses and sheep to ducks and chickens, countless creatures are being pulled to safety by courageous volunteers and organizations.

The Palisades and Eaton fires, some of the most destructive in the region’s history, have already claimed 27 lives and destroyed thousands of structures. Many residents were forced to evacuate quickly, leaving their pets and livestock behind.

The Pasadena Humane Society has stepped up, taking in over 610 animals since the fires began on January 7. Teams are working tirelessly to locate and rescue pets trapped in homes. “We’re logging every report and sending out rescue teams as soon as it’s safe,” said a spokesperson from the organization.

Evacuation centers across Los Angeles have opened their doors not just to people, but also to their animals. Hundreds of horses, cows, pigs, and even donkeys have been moved to safety at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. Still, some animals couldn’t be saved, with reports of livestock lost to the flames.

While official efforts continue, independent groups and individuals are stepping in to help. Vera Valdivia-Abdallah and her daughter Tamarah, both horse enthusiasts, have been driving their trailers into fire zones to rescue horses. “It doesn’t matter if you know the person or not. If there’s a fire, people come with trucks and trailers,” Vera told CNN.

Their efforts are part of a volunteer network that started as a group chat and has grown into a well-organized rescue operation. “It’s like being the fire department and getting dispatched,” Vera explained.

Cole Bush, a livestock owner, has also joined the effort. After seeing a social media post about animals in need, she rallied her community to help. With trailers capable of transporting 100 sheep and goats, Bush and her team have been navigating narrow, fire-threatened roads to save animals.

But the work doesn’t stop at rescues. Bush has launched the Ojai Horse and Herd Network, a platform connecting livestock owners with resources and support. “These animals are essentially family,” she said. “Leaving them behind feels like losing a part of our purpose.”

As the fires continue, the dedication of these rescuers reminds us of the deep bond between humans and animals—and the lengths we’ll go to protect them.
