In a major shift for California’s cultural landscape, the California Historical Society (CHS) has announced it will dissolve and hand over its extensive collection to Stanford University. The decision comes after years of financial strain, worsened by the pandemic, leaving the society unable to sustain its operations.

Founded in 1871, CHS has been a key player in preserving California’s rich history. It holds an impressive trove of over 600,000 items, including rare artifacts dating back to before the Gold Rush, maps, photographs, and printed materials from the American West. Despite its significance, the society never received regular state funding, relying heavily on private donations.

Tony Gonzalez, the board chair, described the move as “bittersweet” but necessary. “We think of it as a rebirth,” he said. While Stanford won’t serve as a state historical society, Gonzalez believes the university’s resources will ensure the collection remains accessible and well-preserved for future generations.

The collection includes everything from a 1906 map showing San Francisco’s earthquake damage to vintage liquor bottle labels from the 1930s. For history buffs, this transfer means the treasures of California’s past will live on, even if the society itself won’t.

While it’s the end of an era for CHS, this move ensures its legacy continues in new hands. Stanford’s stewardship promises to keep California’s history alive for years to come.
