Bringing Anne Frank’s Secret Annex to New York, and the World

Imagine stepping into the very rooms where Anne Frank and seven others hid from the Nazis for two years during the Holocaust. Now, for the first time outside of Amsterdam, an immersive exhibition brings this haunting space to life in New York City.

“Anne Frank the Exhibition” is a 7,500-square-foot multimedia experience that meticulously reconstructs the secret annex in Amsterdam. From the covered windows to the peeling wallpaper, every detail transports visitors to the cramped quarters where Anne penned her world-famous diary.

The heart of the show is a full-scale replica of the annex, including the room Anne shared with Fritz Pfeffer, a dentist. But the emotional impact doesn’t stop there. One of the most moving moments comes when visitors see a photograph of Anne’s kindergarten class. At first, it seems like an ordinary snapshot of happy kids. But later, the image is transformed into an animation that reveals a devastating truth: as the names, ages, and fates of the Jewish children are read aloud, their images fade into black silhouettes, a stark reminder of the lives lost.

This exhibition, which opens on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, will stay in New York for three months before traveling to other cities. It’s not just a chance to walk through history—it’s a powerful way to connect with the personal stories of those who lived and died during one of humanity’s darkest chapters.

As one organizer put it, this installation adds “a very personal, intimate, heartbreaking element” to the history of the Holocaust. It’s a must-see for anyone looking to understand the past in a deeply human way.
