The owner of a luxurious mansion once rented by Adele claims the singer’s spooky comments have left the property unsellable.
Back in 2012, Adele, then 23, gave an interview to Anderson Cooper inside the 10-bedroom estate in West Sussex, England. During the tour, she hinted that parts of the house were “quite scary,” mentioning its past as a convent. While she didn’t outright call it haunted, the rumor stuck, and media outlets ran with the ghostly narrative.
Nicholas Sutton, the mansion’s owner, is now seeking approval to turn the property into apartments, blaming Adele’s remarks for scaring off potential buyers. According to documents filed with Horsham District Council, Sutton has struggled to sell the house for over a decade.
Despite multiple marketing efforts—including high-profile ads and professional campaigns—the mansion has attracted just one serious offer, which later fell through when the buyer learned about its “haunted” reputation.
The sprawling estate, built in 1909, boasts a gym, swimming pool, tennis courts, and even a helicopter hangar. Sutton renovated the property extensively before putting it on the market in 2011. Adele’s six-month stay in 2012, however, added a ghostly twist to its history.
Now, Sutton hopes to transform the mansion into three separate homes and convert an existing garage into a cottage. Horsham Borough Council will decide whether to approve the plan.
Adele’s representatives have not commented on the matter, but it seems her offhand remark has left a lasting—and costly—impact.
